16.9.66 is Hoyland at his most iconic. Flat planes of thin and evenly applied acrylic lure the viewer into an almost hypnotic spatial awareness. His one man exhibition at Whitechapel the following year was a defining moment in British painting and pushed him to the forefront of aspiring young contemporaries that included David Hockney, Bridget Riley and Patrick Caulfield.

The Tate Gallery acquired a similar but larger work for the permanent collection in 1966.
