By 1960 Davie had already had his first travelling retrospective (1958 March to October Wakefield, Nottingham, Whitechapel and Liverpool) and was involved in a dizzying profusion of mixed exhibitions worldwide. Fruit Disher is a core example of his work from this year; large scale, dramatic composition which defines the artist's own words 'a kind of tramsmutation - a searching for a formula for the magical conjuring of the unknowable'
