In Nowhere 2, colour and structure is inseparable. Denny creates forms which have the dual effect of optically tricking the eye to see layered depth and flatness simultaneously. He avoids what could become pattern through the scale of his work.
One of the first artists in Britain to respond to American Abstract Expressionism, Denny established a signature hard-edged style free of natural associations. Indebted to Rothko's Colour-Field painting Nowhere 2 similarly comprises of weightless forms in a colour saturated ground. Structure and space combine to create intimate spaces which pull those outside into some mysterious place.
Denny, unlike Rothko was not on a spiritual quest. His preoccupations remain in the here and now, his titles often reflecting his affection for popular culture.
