Yellow and Brown was painted two years after the Frost family returned to St. Ives, following a period spent in Leeds where he had been teaching. Frost had signed up with the new Waddington Galleries in 1958 and they brought together Roger Hilton, Patrick Heron and Bryan Wynter to form the 'Middle Generation' in 1959. It was a time of financial security and a period during which Frost's international profile was greatly enhanced as he had his first New York exhibition in 1960.
