In 1972 a retrospective exhibition was held of Phillips' work at the
Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster in Germany. As one of the four
acknowledged founders of the Pop Art movement along with Hockney, Jones and
Blake, Phillips has perhaps proved to be the more challenging of all the Pop
Art artists; pushing the boundaries and constantly questioning the ideas of
the last decades. Vibrant in colour and filled with iconography of images
drawn from daily life, Phillips' work such as Small Composition challenges
the spectator's memory, elevates curiosity and awakens their minds to the
world around them. The 1970s was a productive and successful period for
Phillips and involved extensive travel to the USA, Africa, the Far East,
Australia and Europe.
