While at the Royal College Richards read Kandinsky and became increasingly interested in the work of Picasso and Matisse. The Pianist shows the influence of both the great French Masters, combining the elements of each that Richard favoured most. From 1933, he worked under the influence of Picasso, and after the Second World War continued to draw inspiration from the large exhibition of Picasso and Matisse held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1945.
