During the 1930s and 1940s Ceri Richards began a series of paintings and drawings based on the travelling salespeople 'costermongers' who sold fruit and vegetables from a barrow. He sought out the 'Pearly King and Queen' who, dressed in their embroidered costumes, embellished with mother of pearl buttons; he made a number of life sketches which he later worked into paintings.

As the series developed, the feathered hats and embroidered dresses become more the focus of the drawings and paintings than the individuals and here as in Costerwoman we can see the enjoyment Richards had in translating the flamboyance of the characters onto paper.
