The 1950's saw Ben Nicholson producing paintings of exceptional brilliance and subtlety, incorporating still-life motifs but in compositions blatantly governed by purely aesthetic considerations. The early part of the decade was one of great change for Nicholson, his marriage to Barbara Hepworth had ended, he moved to Trezion in St. Ives, and he began a series of paintings for two separate exhibitions in 1954 in Brussels and at the Lefevre Gallery. In 1955 a retrospective exhibition was held at the Tate and a solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils. It was a period of success in the eyes of the world and for Nicholson a period of great productivity. He produced a number of quite diverse paintings, set apart from the aforementioned series that include Crystal where he appears to return to his Cubist ideas, stripping the space of any representational motifs and concentrating on the pure themes of abstraction
