Painted when Vera Spencer had recently graduated from the Slade and showing the influences of Chagall, the Symbolists and the Nabis group her paintings from this period are almost dreamlike in their subject matter. A year later she turned to abstract painting exhibiting in London, Paris and New York throughout the 1950s.
